Things to Do
From music festivals to food festivals, packed piazzas or sleepy villages, cycling tours, water-parks or zip-wires, olive oil tastings or sun-baked beaches – there is something for everyone.
An hour from the villa is the ancient city of Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and European Capital of Culture in 2019. Explore its cave-like dwellings built into the side of a steep cliff edge. Dramatic and completely unique.
Much closer to home you’ll find the enchanting La Luna Nel Pozzo who run a family-friendly outdoor theatre festival every summer. Just 5 minutes walk up the track from the house, you can pay a small fee to have a plate of home-cooked food, drink and watch a show all for a very reasonable price. They also run yoga classes throughout the year.
If you are interested in gastronomic experiences, head along the coast just north of Torre Canne and you’ll find a collection of unpretentious seaside shacks selling ricci (sea urchins) amongst other delicious, fresh seafood specialities. These are among our favourite places to eat in the area and Rick Stein is a fan!
Alberobello resembles an architectural fantasy land. The unusual town is constructed almost entirely of a peculiar construction style unique to this area of Puglia, known as Trulli.
Close to Alberobello these underground caves have been rated as the most impressive in Italy, the Grotto Bianca is one of the most beautiful in the world!
Lions, tigers, zebra, elephants and giraffes are roaming in nearby Fasano, zoo safari – just a 25 minute drive from Casa Calandra
Just a couple of kilometres from Casa Calandra is an adventure park set in a pine forest with zip-wires, climbing challenges, mountain bikes, horse-riding, archery and falconry.
Puglia is an agricultural haven with mineral rich soils and the close proximity of the Ionian and breezy Adriatic this region is Italy’s volume leader in wine production.
This whole region of southern Italy is like one giant market garden, throughout the summer months, a lot of towns host their own food festivals which are just too delicious to miss.

As sampled by Rick Stein on his recent trip to the region, the shacks are dotted along the coastline and serve super-fresh seafood. Specialities include Ricci pasta (sea urchins with fresh pasta) and a glass of wine for around 8 Euros
Spend a day at this beautiful seaside town perched atop a 20 metre-high limestone cliff above the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic, Polignano a Mare.
Every Saturday Ostunimarket is a veritable feast of energy and fresh produce. An abundance of fresh local produce, from seasonal vegetables, meats and cheese this is a must-visit and just a ten minute drive away.
Throughout the year, but particularly in the summer months, there are numerous festivals to visit in the area. These range from local food festivals, to big open-air music events and opera.
