An hour from the villa is Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and designated European Capital of Culture in 2019. Its ancient cave dwellings, the Sassi, are magical at any time of year, and over the summer the city comes alive with festivals, concerts, open-air performances and evening events in the old town.
